چکیده

[1] Climate simulations, using models with different levels of complexity, indicate that the north-south position of the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) responds to changes in interhemispheric temperature contrast. Paleoclimate data on a variety of timescales suggest a similar behavior, with southward displacements of the ITCZ and associated changes in tropical atmospheric circulation during cold periods in the Northern Hemisphere. To identify a mechanism by which ITCZ displacements can be forced from the extratropics, we use a climate model with idealized geography and a simple slab ocean. We cool the northern extratropics and warm the southern extratropics to represent the asymmetric temperature changes associated with glacial-interglacial and millennial-scale climate variability. A southward shift in the ITCZ occurs, along with changes in the trade winds and an asymmetric response of the Hadley circulation. Changes in atmospheric heat exchange between the tropics and midlatitudes are the likely cause of this response, suggesting that this mechanism may play an important role in ITCZ displacements on timescales from decadal to glacial-interglacial. Extensive wet episodes in Late Glacial Australia resulting from high-latitude forcings

Millennial-scale cooling events termed Heinrich Stadials punctuated Northern Hemisphere climate during the last glacial period. Latitudinal shifts of the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) are thought to have rapidly propagated these abrupt climatic signals southward, influencing the evolution of Southern Hemisphere climates and contributing to major reorganisation of the global oceanatmosph...

Western Pacific thermocline structure and the Pacific marine Intertropical Convergence Zone during the Last Glacial Maximum

Paleoclimate proxy evidence suggests a southward shift of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) during times of Northern Hemisphere cooling, including the Last Glacial Maximum, 19–23 ka before present. However, evidence for movement over the Pacific has mainly been limited to precipitation reconstructions near the continents, and the position of the Pacific marine ITCZ is less well constrai...

Formation and Variability of a Northerly ITCZ in a Hybrid Coupled AGCM: Continental Forcing and Oceanic–Atmospheric Feedback*

Despite the equatorial symmetry of the annual-mean insolation, the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) and the collocated band of high sea surface temperature (SST) assume perennial northern latitudes over the eastern Pacific and Atlantic. An atmospheric general circulation model is coupled with an intermediate ocean model to study continental forcing and oceanic–atmospheric interaction that ...

Dynamics of the ITCZ–Equatorial Cold Tongue Complex and Causes of the Latitudinal Climate Asymmetry*

A coupled atmosphere–ocean–coastline model driven by solar radiation is advanced to understand the essential physics determining the annual cycle of the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ)–equatorial cold tongue (ECT) complex and associated latitudinal climate asymmetry. With a thermocline depth similar to that of the western Pacific, the aquaplanet climate is latitudinal symmetric and stable...

VARIABILITY OF THE MARINE ITCZ OVER THE EASTERN PACIFIC DURING THE PAST 30,000 YEARS Regional Perspective and Global Context

The Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) is manifested as a circum-global atmospheric belt of intense, moist convection and rainfall, marking the confluence of the northern and southern trades and the rising branch of the Hadley cell. It regulates the hydrologic cycle over the tropical continents and interacts tightly with the tropical oceans, notably with the seasonal appearance of the equato...
